Many people will argue that the best car in the world is the Ferrari 250 GTO. The Ferrari 250 GTO is a sports car that Ferrari made for racing in the early 1960s. During it's heyday, the GTO dominated the World Sports Car Championship, and it is still one of the most beautiful shapes to grace a Ferrari chassis.

Only 39 GTOs exist and all have an intriguing history. In 2004, Sports Car International placed the 250 GTO in the top 10 in a list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s, and also nominated it as the top sports car of all time. Similarly, Motor Trend Classic placed the 250 GTO first on a list of the "Greatest Ferraris of all time". For these reasons, the GTO is one of the most desired and expensive cars. When new the GTO commanded a US$18,000 purchase price, and buyers had to be personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and his dealer for North America, Luigi Chinetti.

In 1989, a 250 GTO was sold to a Japanese buyer for $14.6 million plus commmission. In 2008, a British buyer bought a 250 GTO that formerly belonged to Lee Kun-hee of Samsung Electronics at an auction for a record 15.7 million pounds. Rumours have it from well known sources that a 250 GTO was recently sold to a British buyer for $28.5 million from a Scottish vendor.
