The VW Beetle which is synonymous in the motoring world was built by German auto maker Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. The car was originally known as Kafer,the German word for “beetle”. Adolf Hitler had an idea to build a low cost car for the masses which proved to be a huge success with sales reaching over 21 million. The job of designing “the peoples car” went to Ferdinand Porsche –who came up with a rear-engined ,air-cooled design. The VW Beetle was more comfortable and powerful than most European small cars during the 1950s.Ultimately it became the longest running and most produced automobile of a single design.

On 30 July 2003,the final original VW Beetle was produced at Puebla,Mexico ,some 65 years after its original launch. In 1988 strong public reaction persuaded Volkswagen to put into production the New Beetle drawing heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle. Unlike the Beetle ,the New Beetle has it’s engine in the front driving the front wheels and luggage storage in the rear.
